Half-Price Books Donation Request

Updated: Dec 29, 2021

A tool for schools and local 501 (c)(3) non-profits

Welcome to BookItDFW's first blog post!

Half-Price Books has recently announced their Million Book Donation project. As a part of their project, they have made it their mission to fulfill the donation requests of their local community.

Half Price Books will consider donation requests from 501(c)(3) nonprofit organizations and educators that focus on literacy, the environment, or education.

Obtaining new books for elementary, middle, and high schools is a very important project for the community. Reading has been proven to improve the cognitive skills, imagination, and knowledge of children and teenagers. Hence, it is very important to supply kids with the resources they need to be more engaged in this activity. One way that schools can do so is by adding a wider variety of books to their libraries. Through a simple process, schools can provide hundreds of new books to their students through Half-Price Books. This is a very valuable resource that often goes unused. We hope to increase awareness of the resource by outlining the simple process for requesting books below.

Fill Out a Donation Request Form

The first step is very simple. If you are representing a school or non-profit, simply fill out the form linked here. It is very important you have access to your tax id if you are a school or non-profit. This is the most important detail of the form request. Half-Price books policy restricts them from donating to organizations without a tax id. Half-Price books have a 60 day advance notice for addressing donation requests. If you do not hear back from the store within 60-days, you should resubmit your request. It may sometimes be easier to even drive to your local half-price store and fill out the form in person. Transactions may sometimes occur faster this way.

Pick-Up and Delivery

After filling out the form, it is important you make a plan for the pick-up and delivery of the books. This is a step that may be overlooked, but it is very important. The books will usually come in large and heavy boxes. Make sure that you have the proper vehicle and help to transfer these from a store location to a school. Local half-price book locations sometimes even give more books than requested so it is important to be prepared.

Assortment and Display

If you are a local non-profit, delivering the books to a local school might be the last step. However, if you are a school, this next step is also very important. The process of how books are assorted differs according to each district, but make sure to document & categorize all books that were obtained. School districts may require books to meet certain requirements for elementary, middle, and high school students respectively. Hence it is important to check before hand that the books that are received are age-appropriate for students.

It's as simple as that! Place your new books on the shelves for students to start reading!

*If you are a local school in Dallas-Fort Worth that is interested in attaining these books through Half-Price books but do not have the means to fill out the request form or deliver them, please check out our BookItDFW request form linked here by scrolling to the bottom of the page. We will try to get back to you within 72 hours of your submitted request so that we may communicate with you regarding the details for book donation.
